Two Nigerian universities make global SDG ranking

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Two universities in Nigeria were among higher institutions believed to be making a global impact in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

They are the University of Ibadan and Covenant University, Ota.

They are among about 450 universities from 76 countries considered in what was the maiden edition of the SDG based Ranking.

Information available to on Monday shows that the ranking was conducted with metrics developed by Times Higher Education and Vertigo Ventures.

Tagged the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings, it seeks to assess global performance of universities against the United Nations’ SDGs.

“We use carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons across three broad areas: research, outreach, and stewardship,” a statement on the ranking website stated.

The ranking saw American and Chinese research powers severely relegated in favor of universities in Canada, Scandinavian countries and New Zealand.

The University of Auckland, New Zealand is the best university in the world for SDG values.

In West Africa, one other university featured along with the Nigerian universities is the University of Ghana.

While the University Of Ibadan appears between 200 – 300, both the Covenant University and the University Of Ghana are in 300+.

The 17 SDGs were adopted back in 2015 by the United Nations to transform our world by 2030.

The ranking organisation used 11 out of the 17 SDG goals to conclude on its rankings.

GOAL 17: Partnerships to achieve the Goal
