In a bold move to elevate its global academic standing and boost research output, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has unveiled a comprehensive policy to incentivise faculty members who publish in high-impact, SCOPUS-indexed journals.
The policy, announced in a Special Bulletin dated Tuesday, 25 August 2026, marks a strategic shift from non-indexed local journals to internationally recognised databases, aiming to enhance the institution’s research visibility and competitiveness on the global stage.
Cash Rewards and Special Recognition
At the heart of the new incentive structure is a direct cash award of ₦100,000 to any staff member whose article is published in a SCOPUS-indexed journal. But the rewards do not stop there.
The university has also instituted a Special Recognition scheme for the top 30 researchers with the highest number of SCOPUS-indexed publications. These scholars will be treated to a special lunch session with the Vice-Chancellor, receive an additional ₦100,000 honorarium, and be awarded a certificate of recognition.
The ultimate prize, however, goes to the Overall Best Researcher, who will earn a fully paid overseas conference trip. The distinguished researcher will also be featured in a special edition of the University Bulletin, shining a spotlight on their contributions to knowledge.
Patents and Affiliation Requirements
Researchers with patented research outputs are not left out. Staff members whose work results in patents automatically qualify for the Special Recognition and Overall Best Researcher categories, entitling them to the Vice-Chancellor’s luncheon, the cash honorarium, a certificate of honour, and a special bulletin feature.
Crucially, the university emphasised that all qualifying publications must demonstrate clear evidence of affiliation with ABU, ensuring that the institution receives due credit for research produced under its banner.
Driving Research Excellence
The policy, which takes effect in 2026, is designed to do more than reward individual achievement. According to the bulletin, the initiative aims to motivate staff to patent their research outputs, promote a culture of research excellence, and significantly boost both individual and institutional research productivity.
ABU Management noted that the policy would be reviewed periodically to ensure it remains effective and continues to achieve its intended purpose of positioning the university and Nigeria at the forefront of global academic discourse.
