Muhammad Kamalud-deen University (MKU), Ogidi, Ilorin, has recorded a 100 per cent success rate in its recent National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation exercise as the institution prepares for its maiden convocation ceremony in 2027.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Rasheed Gbenga Jimoh, disclosed this during a radio interview programme, The Beat, while outlining the institution’s development since it received its operating licence in 2023.
Professor Jimoh said the university obtained its operational licence on June 9, 2023, before undergoing the mandatory NUC resource verification exercise in October of the same year.
Academic activities subsequently commenced in late 2023 with 15 degree programmes, while the university’s student population has since grown to more than 500.
13 programmes assessed
Speaking on the institution’s regulatory progress, the Vice-Chancellor said MKU presented 13 programmes for NUC accreditation.
He disclosed that 10 programmes received full accreditation, while the remaining three were granted interim accreditation.
According to him, the outcome places the university’s pioneer students on a firm path towards graduation, with the first cohort expected to enter their final year in October 2026.
He explained that the accreditation status would enable the pioneer graduates to obtain their degrees and subsequently qualify for mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme ahead of the university’s maiden convocation in 2027.
University seeks full operating status
Professor Jimoh also disclosed that the university underwent an institutional assessment by the NUC between April 20 and 23, 2026.
He explained that the exercise formed part of the regulatory requirements for the institution’s transition from a provisional licence to full operating status.
Beyond the existing programmes, the university is also preparing to expand its academic offerings.
The Vice-Chancellor said resource preparations were completed in August 2026 for proposed programmes in Law and Health Sciences.
The proposed programmes include Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Nursing Science, Public Health, Medical Laboratory Science and Doctor of Physiotherapy.
He said the university is currently awaiting final regulatory approval before commencing admissions into the proposed programmes.
Scholarships for students
Professor Jimoh further highlighted the institution’s scholarship and affordability initiatives, noting that MKU was established to preserve the educational legacy of the late Sheikh Muhammad Kamalud-deen Al-Adaby, founder of the Ansarul Islam Society of Nigeria.
He said the university’s proprietor provides full tuition waivers for students studying Arabic Language and Islamic Studies.
The institution also offers subsidised fees for selected STEM disciplines, including Mathematics and Data Science.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the measures are designed to widen access to affordable and quality university education for young Nigerians while maintaining the institution’s commitment to academic development.
With its accreditation successes, institutional assessment and proposed expansion into Law and health-related disciplines, MKU is positioning itself for further growth ahead of its anticipated maiden convocation in 2027.
