President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new set of appointments across major education agencies, a move seen as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and policy direction in Nigeria’s education sector.
The appointments, announced in a State House press statement, affect the National Examinations Council (NECO), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the National Library of Nigeria, and the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam in Plateau State.
For NECO, the President appointed Modupe Adeola Adelabu as Chairman of the Governing Board, while retaining the Registrar, Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, in his current role. Adelabu, a professor of educational administration and former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, previously chaired NBTE between 2018 and 2021.
In the technical education sub-sector, Babatunde Salako was appointed Chairman of NBTE, with Idris M Bugaje reappointed as Executive Secretary for a second and final term of five years. Salako, a former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, is credited with strengthening research governance and expanding international collaborations during his tenure.
At the institutional level, the President named Bongfa Binfa as Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam, Plateau State, for a single five-year term. Binfa, who holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, previously served as Deputy Rector (Academic) at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny.
The administration also renewed the tenure of Chinwe Veronica Anunobi as Director-General of the National Library for a final five-year term. Since her initial appointment in 2021, Anunobi has led reforms aimed at modernising the institution, including the development of the National Repository of Nigeria and the National Virtual Library.
According to the Presidency, the reappointment is expected to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms, particularly the completion of the National Library headquarters in Abuja and the implementation of its 2025–2030 strategic plan.
The statement, signed by presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga, noted that the appointments reflect the government’s intention to reposition key education institutions for improved service delivery, enhanced research output, and stronger regulatory oversight across the sector.
