The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has appointed Mrs Ramatu O. Ibrahim as Acting Bursar following the sudden death of the university’s substantive Bursar, Mallam Nasir G. Marafa.
Ibrahim’s appointment, approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Uduma Oji Uduma, with the concurrence of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mallam Isa Yuguda, CON, took effect on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, and will remain in force until further notice.
The Registrar of the university, Mr Oladipo Ajayi, announced the appointment in a public notice issued on Tuesday.
The university said the appointment was intended to ensure continuity, stability and effective leadership in its financial administration following the loss of the substantive Bursar.
Marafa, who was appointed NOUN Bursar effective September 17, 2022, reportedly died after he was shot while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State. The university had described his death as sudden and untimely and commended his dedication, professionalism and service to the institution.
Management said Marafa’s contributions to NOUN’s financial administration and institutional development would be remembered with gratitude.
Ibrahim, who was Deputy Bursar, Treasury, before her appointment, is an experienced university administrator with extensive knowledge of NOUN’s financial operations and institutional processes.
She has served in several key operational units of the Bursary Department, where she gained experience in accounting, financial management, treasury operations and related administrative functions.
In her immediate past position as Deputy Bursar, Treasury, Ibrahim provided professional leadership and oversight of the university’s treasury operations.
The Registrar said her extensive experience across the Bursary Department and familiarity with the university’s financial systems and procedures positioned her to provide effective leadership during the transition.
He added that her appointment was expected to support the continued delivery of efficient, transparent and accountable financial services at the university.
NOUN Management expressed confidence in Ibrahim’s ability to discharge the responsibilities of the office with professionalism, diligence, integrity and a strong sense of institutional responsibility.
The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the university’s management, congratulated Ibrahim on her appointment and wished her a successful tenure.
The university community was also urged to give the Acting Bursar the necessary cooperation and support as she assumes her new responsibilities.
