Tinubu appoints Abel Enitan, education perm sec as Head of Civil Service

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Mr Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan as the new Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), effective August 27, 2026.

Enitan succeeds Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, who is due to retire from the Federal Civil Service upon attaining the statutory retirement age of 60.

The appointment was announced in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Enitan to become HCSF after seven years as Permanent Secretary

Enitan, an indigene of Osun State, is currently the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education and is the most senior Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service.

He has served as a Permanent Secretary for seven years and seven months, with postings to the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the Office of the Vice President before his current posting to the Federal Ministry of Education.

The Presidency said his extensive experience across key government institutions had given him considerable knowledge of the workings of the Federal Civil Service and positioned him for the new responsibility.

President Tinubu charged the incoming Head of Service to consolidate the reforms and innovations already underway in the Federal Civil Service while deepening professionalism, efficiency and accountability.

He also tasked Enitan with building a more responsive and effective civil service capable of supporting the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to the President, the Federal Civil Service under the new HCSF should remain professional, merit-driven, accountable, innovative and responsive to the needs and aspirations of Nigerians.

Tinubu commends outgoing Head of Service

President Tinubu expressed appreciation to Walson-Jack for her service to the country and the reforms and innovations recorded in the Civil Service during her tenure.

He wished the outgoing Head of Service a fulfilling post-retirement life and conveyed the nation’s gratitude for her years of dedicated public service.

Enitan’s background

Enitan was born on December 12, 1966. He had his secondary education at Ajibode Grammar School, Ibadan, before proceeding with his higher education and subsequent career in the public service.

His appointment places an experienced Permanent Secretary at the helm of Nigeria’s federal bureaucracy at a time when the government is seeking to strengthen institutional efficiency and improve public-sector delivery.

Enitan will formally assume office on August 27, 2026.
