The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across Oyo State to withdraw their services indefinitely, commencing Monday, June 1, 2026, in protest over the prolonged captivity of colleagues and learners abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area.

The directive, which originated from the union’s national leadership and was formally communicated through the state chapter, comes more than two weeks after gunmen seized teachers and pupils from institutions in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities.

In an official notice dated May 31, 2026 and bearing the reference NUT/OY/G.12/VOL.V/50, the Oyo State Wing of the union addressed the directive to all elected state officers, branch trustees, headteachers, principals, and teachers of public primary and secondary schools. The letter was signed by Comrade Salami B. Olukayode, the State Secretary, on behalf of the state leadership.

The union described the continued detention of the victims as a source of “fear and hopelessness” among teachers, noting that it has discouraged parents from sending their children to school and triggered panic across communities statewide. The industrial action, the NUT emphasized, is designed to pressure both government authorities and security agencies to escalate rescue efforts and secure the timely release of those still held captive.

While urging members to remain “law-abiding and stay safe in their respective homes,” the union affirmed that it stands in solidarity with the victims and their families. “The union and entire teachers in the country stand in solidarity with the victims and their families as more lawful engagements with the government for the safe return of the abductees continue,” the statement read.

Teachers have been instructed to comply fully with the work stoppage and remain at home until further notice. The letter concluded with the union’s rallying cry: “Solidarity forever!”
