Bedford School in England is set to admit female students for the first time in its 474-year history, with the historic institution announcing plans to become co-educational from September 2027.
The school, founded in 1552, is managed by the Harpur Trust, which has overseen its affairs since 1764. The trust announced the change as part of a wider £multi-million investment programme across its schools over the next 12 months.
The move will make Bedford School, an independent day and boarding school, accessible to girls for the first time since its establishment.
The Harpur Trust said the planned investment would ensure that its schools continued to provide distinctive educational experiences while responding to changing educational needs.
“Education is changing rapidly, and we continually review how our schools can best meet the needs of current and future generations,” the trust’s Chief Executive, David Steadman, said.
He added that the plans would enable the trust’s schools to continue delivering an outstanding educational experience for future generations.
The changes extend beyond Bedford School. Bedford Girls’ School is expected to receive a new music centre and recital space, alongside investment in its sports programme and a new wellbeing hub.
At Bedford Modern School, refurbishment plans include improvements to the reception area and the addition of a multi-faith prayer room. Meanwhile, families with children at Pilgrims Pre-Preparatory School will be able to access up to 30 hours of free childcare each week.
The trust said the transition to co-education at Bedford School would expand access to education while enhancing the experience of existing members of the school community.
The historic decision marks a significant change for an institution whose notable alumni include former England cricket captain Sir Alastair Cook, comedian Al Murray and Olympic champion Harold Abrahams.
The first girls are expected to join Bedford School in September 2027, bringing to an end nearly five centuries of male-only education at the historic institution.
