The Senate of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Kogi State, has expelled six students for gross examination misconduct after they were found to have rewritten an examination at the private residence of their lecturer.
The university also approved the withdrawal of nine other students over poor academic performance and failure to register for two consecutive semesters.
The decisions were reached at the 167th Regular Meeting of the university’s Senate, held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the university auditorium.
The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Uredo Omale, disclosed the decisions in a statement issued on Monday.
According to Omale, the university management acted on July 1 after receiving information that a lecturer was coordinating students to rewrite an examination at his residence.
She said security operatives subsequently arrested Dr Maji Okpanachi of the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, alongside some students, at his residence behind the Police Area Command Office along Idah Road, Anyigba.
The matter was subsequently referred to the university’s Examination Misconduct Committee for investigation.
The committee, according to the university, confirmed the security report and obtained confessional statements from the lecturer and students involved, alongside other relevant records.
It found that the affected students had rewritten BOT102, Introduction to Plant Science, at the lecturer’s residence several days after the original examination.
The students were also found to have paid ₦10,000 each to the lecturer to participate in the second examination.
Following consideration of the committee’s report, the Senate approved the expulsion of the six students involved.
It also referred Dr Okpanachi to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the university’s regulations.
Nine students withdrawn
In a separate decision, the Senate approved the withdrawal of nine students on the grounds of poor academic performance and failure to comply with registration requirements for two consecutive semesters.
Reacting to the decisions, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining academic excellence, discipline, integrity and quality assurance.
He said the university would not tolerate conduct capable of compromising the credibility of its academic and examination processes.
Usman commended the committees involved in investigating the cases, describing their work as evidence of the institution’s determination to strengthen accountability and protect the integrity of its academic system.
He urged students to remain focused on their studies, uphold good character and comply with the university’s academic and examination regulations.
The affected students have also been directed to surrender university property in their possession, including identity cards and other official items, to the appropriate authorities before leaving the institution.
