Lagos State University (LASU) have qualified for the final of the UNITECOL Cup 2026 after defeating Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) 4–2 on penalties in a tense semi-final encounter played on Thursday.

The highly competitive match ended goalless after regulation time, with both teams creating chances but failing to convert.

LASU nearly conceded in the 23rd minute when Jeremiah fired narrowly wide for YABATECH, while Emmanuel also came close minutes later with a free-kick effort that missed the target by a slim margin.

Shortly after the restart, LASU believed they had taken the lead in the 49th minute, but the referee disallowed the goal for a foul on the YABATECH goalkeeper.

YABATECH responded with swift attacking moves, forcing LASU goalkeeper Isiaka Senyon into crucial saves to keep the score level.

The turning point of the encounter came in the 62nd minute when YABATECH’s Chukwuwendu Miracle was shown a straight red card for bringing down a LASU player, reducing his side to ten men for the remainder of the match.

Despite the numerical advantage, LASU were unable to find a breakthrough before full time, sending the game into a penalty shootout.

The university side will now face the winner of the second semi-final between University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) in the UNITECOL Cup final scheduled for Monday, May 25, 2026.

The UNITECOL Cup is an inter-tertiary football competition designed to promote grassroots sports development, student engagement, and healthy rivalry among higher institutions in Lagos State and beyond. The tournament brings together universities, polytechnics, and colleges in a structured collegiate football championship aimed at discovering young talents, encouraging teamwork, and strengthening institutional sports culture. Organisers say the competition also serves as a platform for scouting emerging footballers and promoting youth development through sports.
