A lecturer at Bayero University Kano, Dr Auwalu Halilu, has secured a prestigious research grant to investigate school re-entry opportunities for married and pregnant girls in Northern Nigeria.

Dr Halilu, of the Department of Adult Education and Community Services, received the award under the Onelife Initiative, with funding support from the Malala Fund, following a highly competitive selection process that drew 705 applications across five focal states.

His proposal was shortlisted for Kano State, a development widely seen as a testament to the academic quality, policy relevance, and societal significance of the research.

The study will provide a comprehensive assessment of the realities, challenges, opportunities, and policy options surrounding the re-entry of married and pregnant girls into both formal and non-formal education systems across Northern Nigeria.

The findings are expected to generate evidence-based recommendations to support governments, development partners, and education stakeholders in strengthening second-chance education pathways and promoting inclusive learning opportunities for girls affected by early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and disrupted schooling.

Speaking on the award, Dr Halilu described the grant as both an honour and a responsibility.

“This grant is not only a recognition of the importance of this research area but also a call to contribute evidence that can shape practical policies and interventions capable of transforming the future of vulnerable girls across Northern Nigeria,” he said.
