Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has commenced an investigation into the academic credentials attributed to one of its professors, Arc. Abdullahi Abubakar, following growing attention to his extensive list of qualifications on social media.
The university said it was aware of the viral publication concerning the professor’s credentials and would establish the facts before making an official position on the matter.
The Director of the Directorate of Public Affairs, Awwal Umar, confirmed the development, saying the institution would respond appropriately after completing the necessary investigation.
Umar stressed that the university would not rush to conclusions, noting that due process must be followed before any substantive statement could be issued.
The development followed reports highlighting an unusually extensive academic profile attributed to the professor. The credentials reportedly include five PhDs, five master’s degrees, seven other degrees and 11 diplomas, among other qualifications.
The claims have generated considerable interest within and outside the university community, particularly because of the professor’s position and his involvement in teaching, research and other academic activities.
However, ABU has yet to independently confirm the authenticity or accuracy of the qualifications circulating online.
Efforts to obtain Abubakar’s response were unsuccessful, as repeated telephone calls to him went unanswered.
He, however, acknowledged receipt of a text message requesting his comments but declined to respond at the time.
“Yours refers and noted, but not for now. Thank you,” he replied.
The professor did not indicate when he would provide a detailed explanation of the qualifications attributed to him.
ABU’s decision to investigate the matter is expected to clarify the status, provenance and verification of the academic credentials associated with the professor once the university completes its review.
