The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has announced the death of its Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Marafa Gusau, who was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.
The university announced his death in a notice signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi, on Sunday, describing it as sudden and untimely.
Although reports indicated that Marafa was shot while travelling from Gusau, the university did not disclose further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident or identify those responsible.
Marafa served as the Bursar of NOUN after his appointment took effect on September 17, 2022. His death therefore comes after about four years in the university’s top financial management position.
The university described him as a dedicated, committed and distinguished colleague, expressing condolences to his family, colleagues and the wider university community.
Meanwhile, NOUN has announced plans for a Janaza Ga’ib prayer in his honour at the university’s Jumaat Mosque in Jabi, Abuja.
The prayer is scheduled for Monday, September 7, 2026, immediately after the 1:30pm Zuhr prayer. The mosque is located at the National Open University of Nigeria, Jabi, opposite the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
According to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Shehu Usman Adamu, the former Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the NOUN Governing Council, Mallam Isa Yuguda, OFR, is expected to join other Muslim faithful for the prayer.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Uduma Oji Uduma, is also expected to offer his condolences to members of the Muslim community.
The university called on family members, friends, colleagues and well-wishers within and outside NOUN to attend the Janaza Ga’ib prayer and pray for the deceased.
NOUN prayed that Allah forgive Marafa’s shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus, while also asking for divine comfort and fortitude for his family to bear the loss.
