Dozens of students writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at Government Secondary School, Namnai, in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State narrowly escaped death on Wednesday evening when their classrooms collapsed during a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds.

The incident occurred while students, teachers, NYSC corps members, and external supervisors were still on the premises.

Many were reportedly trapped under the rubble before residents rushed to the scene to assist with rescue efforts.

Several students sustained varying degrees of injury, including suspected fractures, and are currently receiving treatment at the town’s Primary Healthcare Centre.

Eyewitnesses described the situation as terrifying, with parts of the school building caving in suddenly as the storm intensified. Local authorities and education officials are expected to visit the site for an assessment, even as concerns mount over the safety of infrastructure in schools being used for high-stakes national examinations.
