A graduate of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), Abubakar Kabiru Abba, has emerged as the overall winner of an international Hadith competition organised by University of Tabuk in Saudi Arabia.
Kabiru, who previously served as Chief Imam of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) at UDUS, distinguished himself among participants from various countries through exceptional mastery of Hadith memorisation and presentation.
From UDUS to Global Recognition
A graduate of the Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture at UDUS, Kabiru served as MSSN Chief Imam during the 2022/2023 academic session.
His latest achievement marks a significant milestone for Nigerian students in international Islamic scholarship, reinforcing the country’s growing presence in global academic and religious competitions.
Building on National Success
Kabiru’s international victory follows an earlier success at the national level, where he emerged as first runner-up in a Hadith competition organised by the Mohammed VI Foundation for African Oulema held at the National Mosque in Abuja.
Reflecting on his journey, he credited that experience for sharpening his skills:
“My previous experience at the national level helped me understand the standard required. It improved my composure and refined both my memorisation and presentation skills.”
“A Responsibility Beyond Winning”
The scholar described his victory as both humbling and a call to greater responsibility:
“I felt filled with gratitude to Allah and a strong sense of responsibility to live by the knowledge I have learned.”
The competition focuses on the preservation of the Prophetic Sunnah, requiring participants to demonstrate precise memorisation of Hadith alongside accurate chains of narration.
Message to Aspiring Scholars
Offering guidance to students, Kabiru emphasised discipline and sincerity:
“Be sincere in your pursuit of knowledge, remain patient, and stay consistent. Respect your teachers, strive to understand what you memorise, and act upon the knowledge you acquire.”
Kabiru’s achievement highlights the diversity of academic excellence among Nigerian students, extending beyond conventional STEM and social science fields into religious and cultural scholarship.
It also underscores the role of international academic platforms in shaping global recognition for Nigerian talents.
