Commissioner tasks parents on public school enrollment

The Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Tolani Alli-Balogun, has called on parents to enroll their wards in state-owned schools. During an inspection tour to monitor the 2024 placement test for primary six pupils transitioning to junior secondary schools, she emphasized the benefits of public school education in Lagos State.

The placement test was conducted in over 400 locations across the state, with a total attendance of 204,413 pupils. The commissioner visited examination sites in Ajeromi Ifelodun, Ebute-Metta, and Ikeja areas to oversee the process.

Alli-Balogun highlighted several advantages of Lagos State public schools:

  1. Free Education: Public schools in Lagos State do not charge tuition fees.
  2. Qualified Teachers: The state employs some of the best-qualified teachers in the country.
  3. Examination Fees Covered: The state government covers the costs for BECE and WAEC examinations for terminal classes in all junior and senior secondary schools.
  4. Infrastructure and Welfare: The current administration has significantly improved school infrastructure and the welfare of both teachers and students.
  5. Academic and Extracurricular Excellence: Students from Lagos State public schools have won numerous medals in national and international competitions.

The placement test for prospective public school students was organized by the Lagos State Examinations Board. In addition, the commissioner noted the growing number of private schools in Lagos, which now totals 5,662, following the recent approval of 199 new private schools.

Alli-Balogun also emphasized the importance of ensuring child safety in all approved schools across the state.
