WAEC appoints new head in Nigeria

Patrick Areghan, WAEC Head of National Office in Nigeria

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has appointed Mr Patrick Ehidiamen Areghan as the new Head of National Office (WAEC) Nigeria.

He succeeds Mr Olutise Isaac Adenipekun who retired from the services of the Council on 5th March, 2020.

Areghan who hails from Egbele, Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, attended Egbele Primary School Uromi, Edo State from 1968 to 1973; Esan Grammar School, Uromi from 1973 to 1978.

He graduated from the University of Benin in 1983 summa cum laude with a B. Sc. (Hons) Degree in Political Science.

He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Benin in 1989.

In addition, he obtained a Masters Degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

He is a Fellow of the Corporate Governance Professionals of Nigeria (FCGP).

He joined the services of The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in October, 1989 as an Assistant Registrar II.

He rose through the ranks to become Senior Deputy Registrar in April, 2018.

Over the years, Areghan has undertaken many other responsibilities in different capacities for the Council.

Between October, 1989 and June, 1990, he was Assistant Registrar/Subject Officer, Test Development Division, WAEC, Ogba, Lagos.

Then, from June, 1990 to July, 1994, he was Head of Examinations Security, Abuja Branch Office​.

When the Awka branch office of WAEC was opened, he was a pioneer staff member there as the Head of Examinations Security between July and September, 1994.

Thereafter, he was Head of Examinations Security and Deputy to the Branch Controller at the Uyo Branch Office between September, 1994 and January, 2005​.

He proceeded to become Head of Examinations Security and Deputy to the Branch Controller, Lokoja Branch Office​ from January, 2005 to January, 2009.

For ten months after, he would be the Head of Examinations and Deputy to the Zonal Coordinator, Ibadan Zonal Office​ till October, 2009.

The cerebral administrator was the Branch Controller, Kano Branch Office between October, 2009 and March, 2013.

Between March, 2013 and August, 2014, he was Zonal Coordinator, Port Harcourt Zonal Office​.

He held a similar position at the Abuja Zonal Office​ from August, 2014 to February, 2016.

From February, 2016 to January, 2019, he served as Acting Director of Administration and later, Director of Administration at the WAEC headquarters.

He has also attended many training courses and conferences within and outside Nigeria and has presented several papers at some of those conferences as well as at other fora.

The most recent position he held was as Senior Deputy Registrar, Test Administration from January, 2019 to 5th March, 2020.

He assumed office as the Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, on Thursday, 5th March, 2020.

Areghan is a Christian and is married with children.
