The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted allegations of victimizing staff members and violating a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached with the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola F. Adesina, WAEC described the reports circulating in the media as misleading, emphasising that the Council remains committed to upholding justice, equity, and order in its operations.

The dispute stems from concerns raised by NASU regarding the suspension of staff check-off dues and alleged attempts by WAEC to suppress union activities. However, WAEC clarified that it has not reneged on its agreement to reinstate the deduction of check-off dues by March 2025, as agreed in the MoU signed on March 10, 2025.

The statement further dismissed claims that the Council had unilaterally suspended union activities, stressing that WAEC fully recognizes NASU as a registered trade union under the Trade Unions Act. The Council also denied accusations of targeting NASU executives for transfers or engaging in staff victimization.

“The transfer of staff is aimed at career progression and enhancing employees’ experience and professional development,” WAEC explained. “Our Conditions of Service booklet clearly states that staff may be transferred from one station to another as part of their career growth within the Council.”

WAEC reaffirmed its respect for human rights and its commitment to fair labour practices, insisting that it will continue to engage staff members within the framework of the organization’s code of conduct.

“The Council’s dedication to being a law-abiding organization extends beyond mere compliance; it reflects a deep-seated commitment to upholding the values of justice and integrity in all its endeavors,” the statement concluded.

The clarification comes amid ongoing concerns about labour relations within the education sector, with WAEC reiterating its willingness to foster a harmonious working environment while maintaining its operational standards.
