Verve Poetry Festival City Poetry Competition, 2018

Verve Poetry Festival is delighted to offer City Poetry Competition. The competition is open to anyone aged 16 or over. The authors of the best fifteen poems will be invited to read alongside six commissioned poets at our City Poetry Event at Verve 2018!

Verve is a four day festival of world-class poetry and spoken word, with readings, performances, workshops, children’s events and more in the heart of Birmingham city center.With so many brilliant poetry festivals around the country, they are fiercely committed to making Verve look, sound and feel different right from the start.

1st Prize: £500

Eligibility Criteria

The competition is open to anyone aged 16 or over.
Guides for Applicants

To apply, the applicants must write and submit Poems. The poem must be in English and should have a City focus or context.

They will also accept audio entries of work on mp3 or .wma. ALL audio entries, however, must also be accompanied by a written version of the work and be emailed as described above.

Competition Rules

• Poems must be no more than 80 lines long excluding title, and be typed on A4 paper. There is no minimum length for entries.
• Poems should have a City focus or context.
• Poems must be in English and your own original work.
• Poems must be typed, in English, and unpublished.
• Poems must have a title, and be your original work. No translations.
• All poems will be read and judged anonymously by Luke, cannot be returned, and may not be altered after submission. The judge’s decisions are final.

Motivation of the Contest

Competitions play a role in motivating students to perform and excel and offer a lot more reward than just the winning prize.
