For the seventh year running, the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has maintained its position as Nigeria’s university of first choice.

With not less than 103,582 applications representing 5.31 percent of all applications into higher education for 2020, the UNILORIN has maintained being the most subscribed tertiary institution in Nigeria.

This is based on data EduCeleb.com obtained from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The data also showed that like in previous years, degree programmes are the first choice of the over 1.9 million candidates who registered for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

95.13 percent of applicants chose universities and degree awarding institutions above other tertiary institutions. Those interested in obtaining the National Diploma (ND) offered in monotechnics and polytechnics are next with 2.99 percent.

Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) awarding institutions follow with 1.86 percent and National Innovation Diploma (NID) institutions had 0.02 of first choice applications.

UNILORIN is closely followed by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, which came second for the fourth year and received 82,984 applications or 4.26 percent of all applications.

For the first time in nearly a decade, both the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Bayero University Kano (BUK) rose in the ranks compared with previous years to be third and fourth respectively.

The two institutions used to rank between fifth and eighth in previous years.

UNILAG received 74,800 applications or 3.84 percent of all applications, while BUK had 70,376 or 3.61 percent of all.

Other institutions in the top ten choices are the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; the University of Benin, Benin City; the University of Ibadan, Ibadan; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; and the University of Jos.

Other top institutions of choice

Aside universities and other degree awarding institutions that take a chunck of first choice in all applications, other tertiary institutions were the first choices of certain candidates as well.

The Federal College of Education, Zaria, remains Nigeria’s top most NCE awarding institution of choice for nearly a decade.

It is followed by Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan-Waya, Kafanchan, which only made its debut in the first ten in 2018.

Saadatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso is one rank down to third on the list from 2019.

Federal College of Education, Kano; Federal College of Education (Technical), Gombe; and College of Education, Akwanga are next in that order.

The Federal College of Education, Katsina; the Federal College of Education (Technical), Potiskum; Isa KaitaCollege of Education, Dutsinma, and the FCT College of Education, Zuba were all in the top ten as well.

Among polytechnics, Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna is first and proceeded by the Federal Polytechnic, Offa and the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro.

Ramat Polytechnic, Maiduguri is fourth while YabaCollege Of Technology, Yaba, is fifth.

Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin; Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria; the Federal Polytechnic, Ede; the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede and the The Polytechnic, Ibadan are all in the Nigerian polytechnics of first choice.
