Graduates from the College of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Ibadan (UI) are experiencing significant delays in obtaining their certificates, two years after their December 2022 graduation. This issue is causing substantial setbacks for the affected individuals.
The graduates, from the MBBS 2022 and BDS 2023 classes, expressed their frustration in a letter to the university management on July 11, 2024. “It has been two long years since our graduation, yet many of us find ourselves in a state of limbo, awaiting our hard-earned certificates,” the letter reads. They explained that the delay had led to significant professional and academic challenges.
The lack of certificates is hindering their professional progress. “The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria requires the university certificate for the issuance of a permanent license,” they noted. “The unavailability of our certificates has created an insurmountable barrier, preventing us from obtaining the necessary credentials to progress in our careers.”
Additionally, the delay is affecting their ability to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme and pursue international opportunities such as the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
“We are eager to contribute to society and advance internationally, but the absence of our certificates is blocking these aspirations,” the graduates said.
To address the situation, they have requested the university to urgently provide provisional or electronic certificates as interim solutions while the official documents are prepared. “We earnestly beseech you to consider our plea with the utmost empathy and urgency,” they urged.
When contacted by SaharaReporters, the institution’s spokesperson, Adejoke Akinpelu, stated that the management had just learned about the issue that morning.
She added that the office of the Registrar had taken charge of the matter to ascertain what happened.
“We learned about the issue just this morning and the office of the Registrar is working on the matter already,” Akinpelu said.
