Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest over unresolved welfare and academic challenges affecting campus life.
The demonstration, organised by the Students’ Union, saw large groups of students marching and chanting near the university’s main gate in the early hours of the day, with participants carrying placards while maintaining order.
Video footage from the protest showed coordinated movement by students, who insisted the action remained peaceful throughout, in line with the institution’s tradition of non-violent student activism.
The protest followed a congress held on Monday at Awo Café, where the Students’ Union resolved to mobilise against what it described as persistent institutional neglect of student welfare concerns.
In a statement jointly signed by the Students’ Union President, Adelani David, and General Secretary, Habeeb Oke Isa, the union confirmed that the protest began at about 6 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, with plans to block major roads and gates leading into the campus until demands are addressed.
The union emphasised that the action was lawful, structured, and aimed at drawing attention to pressing issues rather than disrupting academic order.
Among the key grievances raised are transportation difficulties, accommodation challenges, and delays associated with the university’s ongoing e-portal upgrade, which has reportedly affected course registration and access to results.
The union also rejected plans to evacuate students from Awolowo Hall Blocks 7 and 8 for renovation, arguing that the decision lacked adequate notice and alternative accommodation arrangements.
It further urged the management of Obafemi Awolowo University to urgently intervene to restore normal academic and living conditions, while reiterating its commitment to peaceful engagement.
The protest adds to a growing wave of student agitation across Nigerian universities over welfare, infrastructure, and administrative bottlenecks, reflecting wider tensions in the higher education system.
