Security operatives at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), have apprehended two individuals who were posing as lecturers and selling textbooks to unsuspecting first-year students.
According to a statement by the Registrar of the university, Bala Abdullahi, the suspects, David Iluebe from Edo State and Chike Eke from Delta State, were caught in a lecture hall within the Faculty of Engineering.
The suspects introduced themselves to 100-level students as department lecturers, presenting a set of four textbooks covering topics such as Use of English, Statistics, Nigerian People and Culture, and Algebra and Geometry Mathematics.
They insisted that purchasing these books was mandatory for students’ Continuous Assessment (CA), creating a sense of urgency and fear among the students, who subsequently bought multiple copies.
The imposters were arrested on July 25, 2024, after university security operatives acted on a report.
During preliminary investigations, the suspects admitted to the allegations, claiming that they were the authors of the books and were attempting to earn a living due to unemployment.
They also revealed that this was their second visit to Kano, having previously targeted the Kano State Polytechnic.
The statement highlighted that the books were of poor quality and likely pirated.
This incident raises concerns about the increasing presence of fraudsters in tertiary institutions, aiming to exploit students. The university has since increased surveillance and plans to sensitize students about such deceptive practices.
The university management has handed over the suspects to the police for further action and urged students and the general public to remain vigilant against such impersonators.
