A fresh controversy has erupted at Tansian University following the circulation of a viral video showing a male lecturer, widely alleged to be a Catholic priest, being assaulted and stripped by a group of students over claims that he was caught allegedly having sexual intercourse with a female student inside a classroom on campus.

The incident, which reportedly occurred within the university premises in Oba, Anambra State, has sparked widespread reactions across social media, raising questions about alleged misconduct within the institution as well as concerns over mob justice.

The video, which surfaced on X and was viewed by several online users on Tuesday, captured a visibly agitated crowd of students surrounding the middle-aged man, physically attacking him and tearing his clothes until he was nearly naked.

According to reports, the confrontation followed allegations that the lecturer was discovered in a compromising situation with a female student inside one of the school’s classrooms.

Although social media users have widely identified the man as a Reverend Father attached to the Catholic-owned institution, there was no immediate official confirmation of his clerical status as of press time.

Sources within the institution, however, claimed the incident may have been the culmination of what appeared to be a deliberate attempt by students to expose the lecturer following repeated allegations of inappropriate conduct.

A student, who spoke anonymously, alleged that there had been private complaints from some female students regarding the lecturer’s conduct prior to the incident.

According to the source, some students had allegedly grown frustrated over what they described as recurring inappropriate advances and decided to confront the situation directly.

The source said, “People have been talking about his behaviour for some time. It seems they decided to catch him in the act.”

The development has sent shockwaves through the university community and the wider Oba area, particularly because of the institution’s Catholic affiliation and the expectation of strict moral discipline among its academic staff.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the university management nor Catholic Church authorities had issued any official statement confirming the identity of the lecturer, the circumstances surrounding the incident, or whether disciplinary proceedings had been initiated.

There was also no confirmation regarding the identity or welfare of the female student allegedly involved.
The incident has since divided public opinion online.

While some users condemned the alleged conduct of the lecturer if proven true, others criticised the students’ resort to physical assault, arguing that due process should have been followed.

One X user questioned the moral implications of the allegation, while another condemned the mob action, insisting that no accusation justifies public humiliation or violence.

The Anambra State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the matter as of press time, and it remains unclear whether any formal complaint has been lodged or if investigations have commenced.

The incident comes amid increasing scrutiny of misconduct allegations within tertiary institutions across Nigeria, with several universities recently facing public backlash over reports of sexual harassment, bullying, and abuse of authority involving both staff and students.
