President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a major leadership overhaul at several federal universities, including the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University.
The changes, which take immediate effect, include dissolutions, removals, and new appointments across multiple institutions.
Key Changes at Yakubu Gowon University (Formerly University of Abuja)
- Governing Council Dissolved
- Prof. Aisha Sani Maikudi Removed as Vice-Chancellor
- Senator Lanre Tejuoso appointed as Pro-Chancellor (previously Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi)
- Prof. Lar Patricia Manko appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months (ineligible to apply for the substantive position)
University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
- Prof. Polycarp Emeka Chigbu Removed as Acting Vice-Chancellor before his tenure ends on February 14
- Prof. Oguejiofu T. Ujam appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months (ineligible for the permanent position)
- Gen. Ike Nwachukwu Reassigned from Pro-Chancellor of UNN to Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo
- Engr. Olubunmi Kayode Ojo Appointed as Pro-Chancellor of UNN (previously held the same position at Federal University of Lokoja and Federal University of Oye-Ekiti)

- Prof. Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi appointed Pro-Chancellor of Federal University, Lokoja (formerly at University of Uyo)
- Senator Sani Stores appointed Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education (succeeding Senator Joy Emordi)
- Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi appointed Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka
Government’s Justification
President Tinubu stated that these changes are part of his administration’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s higher education system by ensuring dynamic leadership and accountability.
The restructuring is aimed at strengthening governance and promoting academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
