The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, has suspended its ongoing strike following fresh financial commitments by the FCT administration aimed at addressing teachers’ welfare and outstanding entitlements.
The decision was announced by the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) Chairman, Abdullahi Shafa, during a press briefing in Gwagwalada on Sunday.
Shafa said the resolution followed an emergency meeting convened to assess the intervention of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in the dispute, which began on April 20, 2026.
According to him, the minister approved a N5 billion monthly funding arrangement to address teachers’ demands, including the implementation of a 40 per cent peculiar allowance and the settlement of outstanding benefits.
“The minister approved the release of N2 billion monthly from FCT Internally Generated Revenue, plus N3 billion from the 10 per cent IGR accruing to the Area Councils,” Shafa said.
He added that the intervention also covers promotion-related concerns, with the minister pledging to engage the FCT Civil Service Commission on removing vacancy constraints and reviewing the 2024 promotion exercise.
Following the agreement, the union directed all primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT to resume duties on Monday, April 27.
Shafa emphasised that no teacher should face victimisation for participating in the industrial action, warning that the union would reassess its position if the government fails to fulfil its commitments.
He commended teachers for their solidarity throughout the strike, reaffirming the union’s commitment to improved working conditions and sustained advocacy for the teaching profession in the FCT.
