The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has reaffirmed that its research grants are open to all scholars, including those from private universities and even non-Nigerian researchers working on solutions relevant to Nigeria.

Sonny Echono, TETFund’s Executive Secretary, made this clarification in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday, dismissing claims that private universities are excluded from TETFund-funded research.

“Research funding is merit-based, and private university scholars are eligible for grants. Even if you are a non-Nigerian working on a solution to our problems, we are open to collaboration,” Echono stated.

Commitment to Inclusive Research and Innovation

TETFund, according to Echono, is committed to fostering research excellence by ensuring that all scholars, regardless of their institution, can access funding opportunities to drive innovation and knowledge production.

This inclusive approach, he noted, aligns with the broader goal of modernising Nigeria’s education system and addressing pressing national and global challenges through cutting-edge research.

Expanding ICT and Vocational Training

Beyond research grants, TETFund is also investing in technical and digital education, with plans to establish 72 new ICT centres across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria.

These centres will offer students specialised training in:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Cybersecurity
  • Robotics
  • Software Development

Echono emphasised that six ICT hubs had already commenced operations in February 2025, with the additional 72 centres expected to be inaugurated later this year.

“These days, nobody is looking at your BSc or PhD. They want to know your proficiency—can you code? What talents do you have? These are the things employers are interested in,” he said.

Bridging the Skills Gap Through TVET

To further support economic growth, TETFund is also prioritising Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Investments are being made in training electricians, welders, fabricators, and solar panel technicians to meet the increasing demand for skilled professionals in Nigeria.

A Call for Greater Research Collaboration

With its open research policy, TETFund is encouraging scholars from both public and private institutions, as well as international researchers, to apply for funding opportunities and contribute to Nigeria’s academic and technological advancement.

By fostering inclusive research and digital innovation, TETFund aims to position Nigeria as a global leader in education and workforce development.
