The Acting Rector of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), Mr. Olorunwa Adegun, has expressed deep concern over the institution’s inability to conduct convocation ceremonies since 2013. This issue was highlighted during the 31st Matriculation Ceremony for the 2023/2024 academic session, held on Friday in Owo.

Speaking at the ceremony, Adegun described the situation as unacceptable, noting that the institution now has a backlog of 11 convocation editions. He emphasized that the lack of convocation ceremonies has significantly disrupted the academic culture at RUGIPO, diverging from global best practices in higher education.

Adegun, who assumed the position of acting rector in October 2023, assured that his administration is committed to addressing this issue.

“We are taking decisive steps to reverse this unethical trend, and the institution will hold its next convocation before the end of the year,” he announced.

During the matriculation ceremony, 3,175 students were formally admitted into the polytechnic. Adegun praised the prompt responses of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to the institution’s needs, both during his tenure as acting governor and since becoming the substantive governor.

He also highlighted the institution’s policy of charging the lowest school fees among higher institutions in the country. Adegun advised the new students to avoid cultism, examination malpractice, theft, and unauthorized demonstrations. He emphasized that any breach of institutional rules and regulations would result in severe consequences.

Additionally, the rector urged the new students to respect the norms and traditions of the host community, noting that RUGIPO enjoys a cordial and peaceful relationship with its surroundings. He reminded students of the importance of paying school fees and completing registration formalities promptly, warning that those who fail to do so would not be allowed to write examinations.

One of the newly admitted students, Mr. Olajide Owolabi from the Department of Mass Communication, expressed his delight at being accepted into the institution and pledged to focus on his academic goals diligently.

The delay in holding convocation ceremonies at RUGIPO reflects broader challenges within the institution. However, with new leadership and supportive governance, there is hope for a timely resolution and a return to academic normalcy.
