A 21-year-old student from Nasarawa State University, identified as Ikechukwu Godwin, was reportedly shot by a police officer at a checkpoint in Kubwa, Bwari Area Council, Abuja, on Saturday evening.

The incident, which took place around 7 p.m. at FO1 residential layout, involved allegations that Godwin refused to pay a N200,000 bribe demanded by the officers.

Godwin, a 200-level Computer Science student, was allegedly stopped by police at the checkpoint where the confrontation escalated.

Witnesses say tensions rose after Godwin refused the officers’ request for the bribe, resulting in him being shot.

Local residents and eyewitnesses condemned the incident, calling for justice and accountability within the police force.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the shooting, but the event has sparked outrage and renewed calls for police reform in Nigeria, where allegations of police misconduct and extortion are common.
