Police arrests 3 suspects after CRUTECH student’s murder

The Nigeria Police has announced the arrest of three suspected cultists who were caught with a locally made pistol in Cross River State.

The suspects were arrested while allegedly planning a reprisal attack after the killing of a final year student of Electrical Electronics Engineering in the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH), James Jay on Monday .

The State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, who made the disclosure in Calabar on Tuesday and identified the suspects as Bassey Edem Bassey, Daniel Epim David, and Okon Effiong Awakeng.

“On a tip -off on 15 / 7/ 2019 about 1721hrs , suspected armed robbers and cultists were planning to rob and use the proceeds to fund reprisal on a rival cult,” a statement from the police spokesperson’s office read in part.

“While acting on credible information men of Uwanse surveillance were mobilized. The hoodlums on sighting the police opened fire. Police replied and three suspects were arrested.

“The exhibits recovered from them include one locally made pistol , one cartridge and one dagger recovered during the exchange of gunfire. An investigation is ongoing after which suspects would be charged to court for prosecution.”

Meanwhile, three corpses were found lying in various parts of Calabar on Tuesday morning following the killing of James Jay by suspected cultists.

It could not be ascertained if the corpses were victims of cult-related reprisal attacks. But residents believe it may be connected with the killing of James on Monday morning on campus in Calabar by suspected cultists said to be Axe men.

One of the corpses, which is that of a woman, was found at 8 Miles. The body of another woman was found at Ediba in Calabar Municipality and that of a man on the Murtala Mohammed Highway at Big Qua.

It has been confirmed that the late James who was killed in front of his Electrical Engineering Department was a member of the Klans cult.

He resided on Technology Street in Calabar South before his death and he hailed from Yala Local Government Area of the state.

EduCeleb.com reported on Monday that the final year student was writing his exams when he was killed by a cult group now suspected to be Axe Men.
