Workers at five Oyo State government-owned tertiary institutions commenced an indefinite strike on Monday, March 10, 2025, over the non-payment of the new minimum wage and other related arrears.

The affected institutions include:

  • The Polytechnic, Ibadan
  • The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki
  • Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa
  • Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora
  • Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate

The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing approximately 15 staff unions across these institutions, declared the strike following extensive deliberations and consultations. The committee cited the non-implementation of the approved 25/35% salary increase, which has been in effect for counterparts in other institutions since January 2024, and the non-payment of the new minimum wage for workers in the Polytechnic and College of Education sectors.

This industrial action comes just days after the commencement of first-semester examinations at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, leading to the closure of the institution’s gates.

In response, the rectors of the affected institutions have appealed to the striking workers to consider the impact of their action on students and the academic calendar, urging them to return to work while negotiations continue.
