The Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) has inducted 141 graduates from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) into the profession during the 11th oath-taking and induction ceremony held on the university campus.
Yemi Gbadegesin, the Registrar of NISLT, praised the graduates for their dedication and enthusiasm toward the profession since the last event planning.
He emphasised that the Science Laboratory Technology program aims to develop highly skilled and professionally competent laboratory scientists through a blend of practical and theoretical knowledge, critical thinking, and logical reasoning.
Gbadegesin highlighted the course’s goal to produce laboratory scientists capable of designing, developing, testing, producing, and maintaining devices, systems, and products beneficial to humanity.
During the oath administration, he urged the new inductees to uphold the profession’s ethics, including honesty, integrity, transparency, accountability, and respect for human dignity.
“The induction of these 141 students aligns with the Institute’s mandate and the SLT University programme curriculum, which requires that graduates complete mandatory professional examinations and become licensed in Science Laboratory Technology,” Gbadegesin stated. He emphasized that adhering to the NISLT ethics is crucial for maintaining professionalism in the field.
Gbadegesin also advised the inductees to carry their practicing licenses during their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilization, as there have been requests for SLT graduates to be posted to relevant organizations.
Prof. Lilian Salami, Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN, acknowledged the growth of the Science Laboratory Technology program in recent years. Represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Catherine Ukponmwan, Salami expressed the university’s commitment to strengthening its collaboration with NISLT to achieve the programme’s objectives.
“In recent years, the Science Laboratory Technology Department at the University of Benin has made significant progress. We are proud of the positive impact we have had, particularly on today’s inductees,” said Ukponmwan. She highlighted the recent approval of a postgraduate program by the Senate, aimed at addressing the shortage of skilled manpower for modern scientific research and interventions.
Ukponmwan congratulated the graduates on their achievements and encouraged them to adhere to ethical and professional standards in their future roles, emphasizing that their education has equipped them with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in various sectors.
