Professional bodies in Nigeria

A professional, according to the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, refers to any person whose education and training allow for his judgment to be relied upon and possesses a certification issued by a recognised professional body or association and is currently working or wishing to work in Nigeria. In this article, focuses on professional bodies in Nigeria.

As an aspiring professional in your chosen field, you need to relate with fellows with vast experience in it. That’s why professional bodies do exist. In your career, it is very important to be a member of a professional body. In case you’re wondering what professional bodies are, read further.

What you should know about professional bodies

Why would you consider joining some professional body? The choice of joining a professional body might not have been in your plan but you just have to get it that they are what keep these professions as professions. They are the soul of the professions. They check, license, sanction and reward professionals who have chosen to be associated with them.

You have to join one of them because:

  • They make you accepted full-fledged into your respective profession. If you don’t belong there, you have nothing doing there. You should be aware that an Accountant who, for instance, is not Chartered is not honoured equally like a Chartered Accountant;
  • They are also regulatory agencies in the profession and do administer necessary disciplinary actions against erring members;
  • They set ethical standards and standard of professional conducts for members including benchmarks and best practices;
  • Some of them administer certification examinations to members depending on their rules. Success in such examination shows some level of competence and professional accomplishments in the profession;
  • As experience increases, your rank increases with your membership rights;
  • They expose members to career advancement events such as trainings, workshops and seminars;
  • Membership is open to you whether as a student, practitioner or corporate body.

It is important to state that:

  • Some are established by government, others by groups of individuals
  • They influence government policies in the profession.
  • They charge annual membership/subscription dues.
  • Most of the professional bodies listed below have their headquarters in places probably far from you. So, their websites are the closest mediums to reach out to them.
  • You can always choose the one that suits your professional specialty and seek more information about it via its website.
  • Some bodies’ websites weren’t mentioned because they seem not to exist though I know the bodies exist.

You would observe that related professional bodies are grouped together based on the titles I find suitable.

If you have any suggestion of additional ones not included yet, kindly use the comment box to do so. Cheers!
