The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has expressed concern over the planned national protest, cautioning that it may not be beneficial for the country based on the history of such demonstrations. This stance was outlined in a communiqué issued at the end of the MSSN’s four-day 37th National Higher Institutions Convention held at Murtala Muhammad College in Yola, Adamawa State.
In the communiqué co-signed by Zonal Chairperson Muhammad Isa and Secretary Auwalu Yunusa, the MSSN stated that the protest would likely not resolve the nation’s issues. They urged the government to alleviate the current hardships caused by recent policies.
“The current trend of agitations for nationwide protest will not augur well for the country, especially because such protests were not usually violence-free in the past. The government should do what is necessary to ease the avoidable hardship that Nigerians have been plunged into through insensitive and poorly thought-out policies,” the group stated.
The MSSN also addressed the controversy surrounding the film “Three Working Days,” produced by Nancy Isime, which has upset some Muslims due to the depiction of hijab-wearing characters as robbers. The group called for calm and urged the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to take appropriate action against the film’s producers.
“Muslim students unequivocally condemn the projection of Islam as evil through a movie in circulation in which armed robbers were portrayed putting on the Muslim dress of hijab and niqab (face veil). We appeal to the already enraged Muslim students to continue to be calm as we await the actions to be taken by relevant authorities,” the statement read.
Additionally, the MSSN urged the federal government to reconsider the Samoa Agreement to ensure the respect of Nigerian cultures and religions before entering such international accords.
The group condemned attempts to link governance failures to the ruling APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket in the last presidential election, emphasizing that justice and good governance are core Islamic principles. They also criticized the international community’s silence and perceived double standards regarding the ongoing violence in Gaza compared to the situation in Ukraine.
Furthermore, the MSSN resolved to focus on the intellectual development of its members through continuous training and enhancing financial sustainability through investments. They encouraged members to emulate the sacrifices of past leaders for societal development.
The convention was attended by various dignitaries, including Salihi Atiku, Special Assistant to the Governor of Adamawa State on Universal Basic Education; Jibrilla Jimeta, Chairman of Yola North Local Government Council; Usman Dada, Amir of the Centre for Islamic Thought, Yola; Shehu Abubakar, National President of MSSN; and Muhammad Isa, MSSN A-Zone Chairman.
