The Education Writers’ Association of Nigeria (EWAN), a network of journalists covering education across various platforms, has reelected Mojeed Alabi as its chairman for a second three-year term.
Mr Alabi is the Head of the Development Desk at PREMIUM TIMES.
The election, held during the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the International Press Centre, Ogba, Lagos, on Thursday, also saw the emergence of new executive members.
They include Iyabo Lawal of The Guardian as Vice Chairperson, Funmi Ogundare of ThisDay as Secretary, and Christiana Alabi-Akande of DevReporting as Assistant Secretary. Other elected officials are Tayo Olorunyomi, Saidat Alausa, and Oyeniran Apata.
Transparent Electoral Process
The election was conducted under the supervision of a committee chaired by Sam Nzeh, an editor with Daily Times Newspapers. Adegunle Olugbamila, a former education editor at The Nation, and Medinat Kanabe of Voice of Naija served as members of the electoral body.
Alabi’s Acceptance Speech
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Alabi expressed gratitude to EWAN members for entrusting him with another term. He highlighted the association’s dedication to impactful interventions in Nigeria’s education sector and its commitment to quality journalism and advocacy.
“It is often said that the reward for hard work is more work,” Mr. Alabi noted. “This aptly captures the decision of our esteemed editors and members who have returned us to the ring for another three years of service. It is both an honour and a challenge that we wholeheartedly embrace.”
He further reiterated the importance of advocacy, saying, “Beyond reporting, advocacy remains a critical tool. With your continued support, we are confident that EWAN will achieve new milestones and create lasting impacts.”

A decorated development and investigative journalist, Mr. Alabi has received numerous accolades for his work, including:
- The Ibrahim Shekarau Prize for Education Reporter of the Year (2012, 2017)
- Human Rights Reporter of the Year at the Nigerian Media Merit Award (2018)
- The Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting (2016, 2018)

Mr. Alabi holds a Bachelor’s degree in English from Obafemi Awolowo University and a Master’s certificate in Diplomacy and Strategic Studies from the University of Lagos.
He has participated in numerous international conferences and fellowships, including the WHO Fellowship to the Road Safety Conference in Brazil and the Global Investigative Journalism Conferences in South Africa (2017) and Sweden (2023).
