Markaz University College, Agege, Lagos, has formally inducted a new set of students into its academic community at its 2nd Matriculation Ceremony, marking the official commencement of their university education.

The matriculating students were admitted into programmes in Arabic, Islamic Studies and Combined Law, as the institution continues to consolidate its footing as an emerging centre for faith-based higher education.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Director of Academic Planning, Mr Nurudeen Ibrahim, charged the students to remain focused on academic excellence and avoid distractions, particularly excessive engagement with social media.

According to him, excellence, discipline and character—not merely academic discipline—are what determine long-term success in today’s competitive world.

“Job opportunities are no longer absolutely restricted to one’s field of study. What matters most is excellence, discipline and character,” Ibrahim said.

He described Islamic education as a balanced system that combines intellectual development with moral values, discipline and service to humanity, urging students to take full advantage of the opportunities before them.

Ibrahim also praised the Founder of the institution, Sheikh Muhammed Habibullah Adam Abdullah El-Ilory (O.O.N.), for establishing the University College in 2024, describing the decision as bold and visionary.

He noted that Markaz operates on strong moral and professional standards comparable to those of the University of Ilorin, and encouraged prospective candidates to select the institution as their first choice in future JAMB registrations and UTME.

‘Markaz Is University of Ilorin in Lagos’ — UNILORIN Representative

Also speaking at the event, Professor Yahya Imam, Director of the Centre for Affiliation, University of Ilorin, described Markaz University College as “the University of Ilorin in Agege, Lagos” by virtue of its affiliation with the federal institution.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole, Imam assured students that all academic privileges available to UNILORIN students are equally accessible to those studying at Markaz.

He added that the University of Ilorin would extend its digital and e-learning resources to Markaz to strengthen teaching, learning and research, while also calling for improved funding to sustain quality academic delivery.

Establishment of Markaz Fulfils Founder’s Long-Standing Vision

Earlier, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr Y.K. Jumu’ah, described the establishment of Markaz University College as the fulfilment of the vision of the late Islamic scholar, Sheikh Adam Abdullah El-Ilory.

Speaking during the 2nd Inauguration Ceremony, Jumu’ah explained that the late scholar had envisaged a gradual progression of the institution from basic education to advanced learning.

“Sheikh Adam began with junior classes, later introduced senior classes, and before his death initiated diploma programmes and wrote about higher educational levels,” he said.

He noted that the elevation of the institution to university status under the leadership of the current Mudir represents a legacy of true succession and continuity.

Matriculation Marks End of Admission for Session

Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the ceremony, Ibrahim explained that matriculation formally completes the admission process for students who have met all entry requirements.

According to him, the exercise also signals the official end of admission for the academic session.

“The matriculation list is forwarded to JAMB before the ceremony. After matriculation, students are issued matriculation numbers, which replace their JAMB registration numbers for all official documentation,” he said.

He added that each matriculation number remains unique to a student from admission until graduation.
