Kwara State Polytechnic has harvested 25 tonnes of corn from its farm, with an estimated market value of N30 million.

The farm’s production represents about 10% of the corn that enters one of Ilorin’s grain markets at Ago daily.

Dr. Abdul-Jimoh Mohammed, the Rector of the institution, highlighted how the polytechnic turned a land encroachment challenge into an opportunity by engaging in commercial farming.

The farm’s cassava yield is expected to produce 180 tonnes when harvested later in the year.

The initiative aligns with the challenge posed by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to maximize the potential of institutions in the state.

Dr Mohammed noted that the polytechnic plans to expand its farming activities, with plans to cultivate an additional 20 hectares in the next rainy season and consider leasing farming spaces to interested members of the public.

This farming project has also helped to reduce land encroachment and make food more affordable for the polytechnic community and residents of Kwara State.
