The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centre in Ottawa, Canada, in 2027.

The proposed centre is expected to enable eligible Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria specifically for the examination.

JAMB disclosed the plan on its official social media platforms following a visit by its Registrar, Professor Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.

According to the board, the initiative is part of efforts to expand access to Nigerian tertiary education internationally and strengthen links between Nigerians in the diaspora and the country’s education system.

The proposed Ottawa centre is also expected to make the UTME more accessible to Nigerians abroad who wish to pursue undergraduate studies in Nigerian universities and other tertiary institutions.

JAMB said the initiative would reduce some of the logistical and financial challenges faced by prospective candidates living outside Nigeria while providing greater international visibility for Nigerian tertiary education.

The centre is expected to begin operations in 2027, subject to the board’s implementation plans.

If successfully established, the facility would provide eligible candidates in Canada and other parts of North America with a more convenient option for taking the entrance examination required for admission to Nigerian tertiary institutions.
