A professor at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), was left frustrated after his postgraduate students failed to show up for a scheduled lecture, sparking concerns about academic commitment and the state of postgraduate education in Nigeria.

Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, a Professor of Media and Cultural Communication, was set to deliver a lecture on “Social Media as Popular Culture” to M.Sc. Popular Culture students at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 24. However, by 2:40 p.m., he found himself alone in the classroom, with no student in attendance.

Taking to social media, Professor Adamu shared his frustration sarcastically, posting:
“So hugely popular that there is standing room only in the class. I will wait one more hour! All by my lonesome self.”

The former Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) lamented the declining commitment among postgraduate students, questioning their dedication to education.
“Sigh. The state of our education. And this is a POSTGRADUATE class for mature students!” he wrote.

Reaction and Debate

His comments have since sparked debates about:

  • The lack of discipline and commitment among postgraduate students.
  • The growing preference for online learning over traditional in-person classes.
  • The absence of accountability in Nigerian higher education.

While some believe that the flexibility of digital learning has contributed to lower classroom attendance, others argue that institutions should enforce stricter academic policies to ensure better student engagement.

This incident raises critical questions about the future of postgraduate education in Nigeria and whether universities need to restructure learning models to align with modern student expectations.
