The Governing Council of the University of Abuja has appointed Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as the institution’s 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor. This historic appointment was confirmed during the 77th Extraordinary Meeting of the Council on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, and takes effect from January 1, 2025, for a non-renewable tenure of five years.

The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Governing Council, Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd), who commended the rigorous selection process. Maikudi emerged as the best among 10 shortlisted candidates interviewed by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board.

A Trailblazing Career

Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi, born on January 31, 1983, in Katsina State, is a distinguished professor of International Law at the University of Abuja. She becomes the first female Vice-Chancellor in the university’s history, following her role as Acting Vice-Chancellor since July 5, 2024, during which she successfully stabilized the institution amidst a challenging crisis.

Maikudi’s journey in academia began in 2008 when she joined the university as a Lecturer II. Over the years, she achieved several firsts, including becoming the first female Head of the Department of Law in 2013, the first female Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law in 2018, and the pioneer Director of the University of Abuja International Centre in 2019. She was elevated to the rank of professor in 2021.

Educational Background and Contributions

Professor Maikudi’s educational background is a testament to her dedication to excellence. She earned her First School Leaving Certificate from Sacred Heart School, Kaduna, in 1993, and her WASSCE from Queens College, Lagos, in 1999.

She proceeded to the University of Reading for her LLB in 2004 and earned an LLM in Public International Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2005. Following her legal education at the Nigerian Law School (2006–2007), she completed a PhD in International Law at the University of Abuja in 2015.

Among her many contributions to academia, she introduced the ‘United Nations Law’ course at the University of Abuja in 2019 and has authored numerous publications in reputable academic journals.

A Visionary Leader

As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Maikudi played a pivotal role in enhancing academic standards and fostering a culture of excellence at the university. She has also represented Nigeria at various international forums across the UK, US, South Africa, Germany, and China, among others, showcasing her expertise and leadership.

The Vice-Chancellor is a member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Nigerian Society of International Law, and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
