Adesina Sunday promoted to Professor at the University of Ibadan

The University of Ibadan (UI) has announced the promotion of Dr Adesina Bukunmi Sunday to the rank of professor.

Until this development recognising his extensive contributions to the field of English phonology, syntax and pragmatics, he has taught at the Department of English of the university for nearly two decades. This promotion, effective from October 2021, marks a significant milestone in Sunday’s distinguished academic career.

Born on October 29, 1971, in Iwo, Osun State, Nigeria, Professor Sunday has an academic journey that reflects his dedication and passion for education. He completed his early education at Baptist Day School Oluponna and Oluponna Community High School. He later obtained his BA (Hons) in English (2001), MA in English Language (2005), and PhD in English (2008) from the UI.

Sunday’s academic career at the UI has been marked by progressive responsibilities and roles. He started as a Tutorial Assistant and has since risen through the ranks, most recently serving as a Reader since 2018.

His teaching portfolio includes a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, covering topics such as phonetics, syntax, and sociolinguistics.

In addition to his teaching, Sunday has been an active researcher and has supervised numerous theses and dissertations. He has successfully guided 47 BA long essays, 89 MA projects, 2 MPhil dissertations, and 30 PhD theses, demonstrating his commitment to mentoring the next generation of scholars.

Sunday’s research interests are broad and impactful. He has published extensively in national and international journals, with significant works on phonology, syntax, and the pragmatics of communication.

His publications include books, edited volumes, chapters in books, and numerous journal articles. Some of his notable works include “Oral English Simplified,” “Speech Writing,” and several edited volumes on contemporary issues in language studies.

He is also an active member of several learned societies, including the English Scholars’ Association of Nigeria, the Linguistics Association of Nigeria, and the Yoruba Studies Association of Nigeria. His editorial contributions include roles as an editor and reviewer for various academic journals.

Sunday’s promotion to professor is a testament to his dedication, scholarly achievements, and significant contributions to the academic community. His colleagues and students have widely recognized this achievement as well-deserved.
