The 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) performance statistics reveal a worrying trend in candidates’ academic preparedness, with more than half of the over 1.95 million examinees scoring below 200 out of a possible 400.

Data EduCeleb.com obtained from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Monday show that 983,187 candidates, representing 50.29% of the total, scored between 160 and 199. An additional 488,197 (24.97%) scored between 140 and 159, while 57,419 candidates (2.94%) managed scores between 120 and 139. Only 3,820 (0.20%) scored between 100 and 119, and a mere 2,031 (0.10%) scored below 100.

In stark contrast, just 12,414 candidates—or 0.63%—scored 300 and above, with only 4,756 (0.24%) achieving 320 or more. A slightly higher proportion, 73,441 (3.76%), attained scores in the 250–299 range.

The data indicates that 334,560 candidates (17.11%) scored within the 200–249 bracket, making them the second-largest group after the 160–199 category.

The 2025 UTME also featured 40,247 underage candidates given a special opportunity to showcase exceptional ability. However, only 467 of them (1.16%) met the score threshold for that classification, and their complete assessment will span three additional stages.

JAMB also reported that 97 candidates were caught in confirmed examination infractions, while 2,157 others remain under investigation. In addition, 71,701 registered candidates were absent. Results for candidates facing biometric issues—as well as those of blind and JEOG candidates—are still being processed. Cleared candidates will be rescheduled for a later exam.

JAMB is set to hold a press briefing later this week to announce official result-checking procedures and individual performance access.

The 2025 UTME outcome has raised concerns among education stakeholders over the persistent underperformance of candidates, signaling urgent need for systemic reforms in Nigeria’s education sector.
