A tutorial centre operator has been caught extorting money from unsuspecting candidates under the guise of procuring the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) application documents even when these were not yet on sale.

This is as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) reiterated that the 2021 UTME and Direct Entry (DE) application documents are not yet on sale and warned the general public to be wary of fraudulent activities of some tutorial centres claiming otherwise.

Bayo Olajide, the proprietor of a tutorial centre named “Perfect Tutors” located in Koroduma, One man Village, Nasarawa State, was said to have charged and collected N6,500 from candidates for the 2021 UTME application documents which sale was yet to commence.

Olajide had confessed to the crime saying he only defrauded four prospective UTME candidates and that if freed, he would desist from such acts as he had learnt his lesson.

Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar said, “He was arrested and when asked, he claimed he is a tutorial operator and that he has been teaching candidates preparing to take the UTME, but the tragedy of the matter is that he is not even qualified to sit that examination in the first instance. It’s a pity that these so-called tutorial centres have become a means of extorting money from candidates to perpetrate examination malpractices.”

“Parents should know there is no shortcut to success. He is collecting N6,500 from candidates even when the costs of UTME/DE application documents are not even up to that amount.”

Olajide had revealed in his confessional statement that his highest academic qualification was “O Level”, adding that he had been in the business for the past four years.

The Board reiterated that the sale of 2021 UTME/DE application documents would be on sale soon and the public would be adequately notified.

The Registrar enjoined the general public to make enquiries on all issues directly from the Board or visit its website for accurate information. They can also visit the various Zonal and State Offices for any clarification they might seek rather than patronising fraudsters.
