WAEC Flags Nearly 200,000 Results Over Exam Malpractice in 2025 WASSCE

Lagos, August 4, 2025 — The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of 192,089 candidates who sat for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates over suspected involvement in examination malpractice.

The withheld results represent 9.75% of the total number of candidates who sat the examination and reflect a slight improvement from 11.92% recorded in 2024 — a 2.17% decrease in reported cases.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, the Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, decried the persistence of malpractice despite strict regulations, citing the rising use of mobile phones in examination halls and organised cheating in some schools as recurring concerns.

“All cases are currently being investigated, and the findings will be presented to the Council’s appropriate committee for consideration. The decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their various schools,” Dr. Dangut said.

He added that candidates who wish to contest the decisions can now submit appeals through WAEC’s redress platform at https://waecinternational.org/complaints.

WAEC restated its zero-tolerance stance on exam malpractice, vowing to continue sanctioning schools, supervisors, teachers, and candidates found guilty of aiding or participating in such offences. “They are not helping the educational system. All hands must be on deck to sanitize it,” Dr. Dangut warned.

Meanwhile, the overall performance for 2025 saw a sharp decline. Only 38.32% of candidates obtained five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics — a significant 33.8% drop compared to 2024.

Candidates can now access their results online at www.waecdirect.org, provided they have fulfilled all financial obligations. Those sponsored by state governments still owing WAEC will not have access to their results until the debts are settled.

In addition, candidates have been advised to apply for their Digital Certificate, which will be released 48 hours after result confirmation. Hard copy certificates for fully processed and released results will be ready within 90 days.
