The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has responded to a viral video showing a staff member of its Faculty of Agriculture allegedly collecting ₦16,000 in cash from new students for admission clearance, declaring a ban on all cash fee collections across faculties.

In a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer, Dr. Okwun Omeaku, on Tuesday, the university clarified that the fees collected were faculty levies and dues to the Nigerian Association of Agricultural Students (NAAS), but acknowledged that the mode of collection—direct cash payments—violated its standard procedures.

“The individual acted under the directive of the Faculty of Agriculture administration to collect the said fees. However, doing so outside the approved bank channels is contrary to the university’s policies,” Omeaku stated.

UNN emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on extortion and unethical conduct, noting that the institution is committed to upholding integrity and transparency.

To prevent future occurrences, the university directed all faculties, departments, and centres to conduct fee collection strictly through designated banks or official platforms. The management also assured the public that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against any staff found exploiting students.

This development follows growing public outrage over the video, which showed a staff member rejecting bank transfers and insisting on cash payments from freshers seeking clearance.
