UNILAG to open own microfinance bank soon

Efforts are ongoing to ensure that the University of Lagos (UNILAG) open its microfinance bank soon. This is as part of its efforts to boost revenue generation and improve on the welfare of students and staff of the fifty-seven year old institution. UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe disclosed this on Wednesday at the Press Conference ahead of the 2017/2018 Convocation Ceremonies of the university. “The University is set to start off a Microfinance Bank which would be an additional source of revenue for the University; and also assist members of staff and the community in meeting some of their financial needs towards home ownership, small scale enterprises, school fees, car purchase and the likes,” Professor Ogundipe said. “A site has been earmarked and remodelling of the building would commence soon.” He also disclosed that the University of Lagos Business School would take off soon. “When fully functional, the School would run short executive courses and professional degree programmes with highly experienced industry personnel as facilitators. The Vice-Chancellor used the occasion to list some of the achievements of the university in the past, ranging from building and cementing partnerships to connecting with local communities. UNILAG’s convocation ceremonies is billed to begin on 1st April with a convocation lecture to be delivered by Vice-President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. Ogundipe disclosed that Mr Osinbajo would also be unveiling the mascot of the Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA) games, which the university will be hosting later in the year. The last time UNILAG hosted NUGA games was in 1998. A total of 7,406 undergraduate degrees and 5,405 postgraduate degrees would be awarded during the Graduation Ceremonies, which will span three days after – Tuesday 2nd, Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th April, 2019. The UNILAG VC said that the ceremonies would run in two sessions daily – one from 9am and the other from 1pm – like it was last year.
