Authorities at the University of Ibadan have established a new Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences.
This is following the approval of the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission in Abuja.
The new Faculty expected to run four degree programmes.
These are Economics, Accounting, Banking and Finance and Marketing.
UI Vice-Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka disclosed the development.
Over the years, Economics has been part of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Established some 61 years ago, the highly regarded Department of Economics at the University of Ibadan is easily one of the best of its type in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Department runs bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D programmes as well as the Master of Business Administration (now ceded to the UI School of Business) and the Master in Banking and Finance as approved by the Senate of the University.
Since the early 1990s, the Department has been host to the highly successful Collaborative PhD programme in Economics funded by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), based in Nairobi, Kenya.
More recently, the Department of Economics is also host to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Centre of Excellence as part of which initiative there will be funded postgraduate programmes in Economics, Accounting, and Banking and Finance.
Olayinka added that, “The iconic CBN Complex and its Students’ Hostels are to be declared open soon by President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
“We salute the foresight, courage, hard work and determination of the founding fathers of our legacy Department of Economics and the entire Faculty, alumni/alumnae, students and friends of the Department for their immense contribution to the very high level of training, education, research and value-added service for which the Department is reputed.”
