President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The President also approved a take-off grant of N15 billion to support the development of the new campus.

Expansion Backed by Law

According to a State House statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, the approval aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which allows the institution—currently based in Wudil, Kano State—to operate multiple campuses nationwide.

Funding and Infrastructure Plans

The N15 billion intervention fund will be sourced from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

The fund is expected to cover infrastructure development, academic facilities, student accommodation and core training assets.

Why Ogun Was Selected

The siting of the new campus followed recommendations from a high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders among whom are Minister of Police Affairs, Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa Officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The meeting assessed factors such as student intake capacity, funding realities, quality assurance, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigerian Police Force.

President Tinubu said the expansion would strengthen governance, improve policing education, and enhance national security, especially as the police continue to expand recruitment.

The move signals a strategic shift toward decentralising police training in Nigeria. By expanding the academy beyond its Wudil base, the government aims to improve access, increase capacity, and modernise law enforcement education across regions.
