The Democratic Front (TDF) has thrown its weight behind the federal government’s decision to scrap the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scholarship scheme, describing it as a necessary and overdue move to halt economic waste.
In a statement issued in Abuja over the weekend, the group said the scheme had long outlived its usefulness and was placing an unjustifiable financial burden on the nation.
TDF criticized the BEA programme for frequently awarding scholarships for courses readily available within Nigeria, stating that it has failed to contribute meaningfully to the country’s educational development.
“This laudable action is long overdue, given the inherent huge economic waste that characterised the BEA scholarship programme,” the group stated. “It has not established any relevant legacy in Nigeria’s educational development since its inception.”
Of particular concern to the group was a revelation from the Ministry of Education that ₦650 million was earmarked for just 60 students in Morocco in 2024 alone.
“This offers a disturbing insight into the type of drainpipe the BEA programme had been on public funds, and a justification of the decision to scrap it,” TDF added.
