The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has issued a warning to Nigerian universities, urging them not to frustrate undergraduate and postgraduate students in completing their projects, theses, dissertations, and other research-related work.
The warning, delivered by the committee’s chairman, Abubakar Hassan Fulata, follows allegations that a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Muazu Muhammed Ahmad, died from depression allegedly due to prolonged delays in completing his PhD program after 13 years.
Fulata emphasized to ABU Zaria’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, that supervisors should support students rather than harass or intimidate them. He appealed to university administrators nationwide to prioritize the timely graduation of students, ensuring they do not face unnecessary delays.
During their ongoing tour of federal universities, Fulata’s committee also identified issues regarding adherence to federal character principles in recruitment.
He specifically noted that several institutions, including the Federal University of Health Sciences in Azare, Bauchi State, and Federal University Dutsin-ma in Katsina State, were found to be non-compliant.
Fulata urged these and other newer universities to ensure balanced and fair recruitment practices, aligning with federal guidelines.
The House Committee’s visit to ABU Zaria and other universities is part of a broader oversight effort to improve standards in university education and address long-standing administrative challenges faced by students and staff alike.
